Why Sestriere

High-altitude, varied, unmistakably Italian

Sestriere is one of those places where you arrive, look around and think: yes, this is exactly right. Everything sits precisely where you want it: a proper après-ski bar at the bottom of the slope, a nightlife that keeps going as hard as you do on day three, accommodation right on the piste, and prices that make you want to do a little victory dance.

A coffee for €1.50, lunch on the mountain for a tenner, 400 km of pistes and the option to simply ski over into France for the day. Long descents, warm-hearted Italians, lively but never overcrowded, laid-back but never dull — Sestriere hits that perfect middle ground.

Chapter 01

The ski area: Via Lattea

Sestriere is part of Via Lattea (the 'Milky Way'), one of the largest international ski areas in the world. Together with Sauze d'Oulx, San Sicario, Cesana, Claviere and Montgenèvre across the French border, it forms a single linked area with more than 400 kilometres of pistes and 70 lifts. From gentle beginner runs to punchy black descents and wide-open off-piste, you can ski here for days without repeating a single slope.

The Kandahar and Banchetta runs are legendary — this is where the men's downhill races of the 2006 Winter Olympics were held. The whole area is beautifully groomed, with modern chairlifts and gondolas that move people up the mountain at serious pace. Snowboarders are well looked after too, with a solid funpark in Sauze d'Oulx and plenty of off-piste terrain around the Fraiteve summit.

Chapter 02

The village of Sestriere

The village itself is a genuine ski village: in winter it buzzes with visitors, in summer the locals head off to other valleys. Authentic, cheerful, compact, and with enough good bars to end every evening differently. It's a five-minute walk from hotel to lift, from lift to après-ski, from après-ski to restaurant. And those two iconic towers? You can spot them from just about anywhere — a kind of compass for every descent.

As Olympic host in 2006, Sestriere was given a serious upgrade: modern infrastructure, renovated hotels and an impressive Olympic square. But the village has kept its Italian charm. You won't find Austrian Stüberl or French chalets here, but Italian trattorias, proper espresso bars and cafés where you round off a day on the slopes with a grappa by the fire.

Après-ski in Sestriere

Après-ski & nightlife

Après-ski in Sestriere is Italian through and through: sociable, stylish and relaxed. From around 16:00 the terraces fill up with Spritz, Prosecco and Aperol. Tabata Lounge, Pinky's and Irish Igloo are the classics for a loud après-ski session, while the cafés on Piazza Agnelli are perfect for a quieter drink with a view of the lifts still running.

For the night owls: the village has several clubs and bars that stay open into the small hours. Tabata Nightclub is an institution, with DJs doing their thing every weekend. Italians love a party and you can feel it — the atmosphere never tips into ski-resort cliché, and it's always a touch more stylish than you're used to.

Chapter 04

Italian food & wine

You come to Italy for the mountains and stay for the food. Wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, polenta with local ragù, tiramisu and the chef's panna cotta — all at 2,000 metres. Mountain huts like Vialattea 2200 and Rifugio Fraiteve serve lunches that would pass for a proper restaurant meal back home. In the evening down in the village: everything from fine dining to authentic osterias where dinner with wine costs you under 30 euros.

From first lift to last round

What a day in Sestriere looks like

  1. 07:30

    Morning start

Alarm at 07:30, breakfast at 08:00, first lift up at 08:30. From Sestriere you can ski straight across to Sauze d'Oulx, Claviere and Sansicario — all part of Via Lattea, and you'll barely notice how many kilometres you're clocking up.

  2. 08:30

    Day trip to France

Fancy making a proper expedition of it? Be ready to go at 08:30 and take the left-hand run towards Montgenèvre in France. Wide-open pistes, panoramic views and a vibe that feels just that bit different.

  3. 13:00

    Powder or terrace

More of a powder person? From Sauze d'Oulx you can drop off-piste and work your way back to Sestriere — if you can see the two iconic towers, you're on track. Prefer to take it easy? Drop into one of the many sunny terraces with an Aperol or a nice glass of rosé. The best igloo bar is a short walk from your hotel.

  4. 16:00

    Ski-in après-ski at GFC

Around 16:00 you wrap up your ski day and ski literally straight into the après-ski bar: GFC (La Grotta del Yeti). Dancing on wooden tables, cocktail or cold beer in hand, with the last of the sun on your face. Pure fun until about 19:00 — but be warned: the cocktails are… enthusiastic.

  5. 20:30

    Theme party at Kovo

After the buffet you freshen up for a theme party at Kovo. 60s, 80s, 90s or a theme of your own — anything goes. Want your own playlist? No problem. Beer pong night or a full-on drinking-song session? Also no problem. The party runs until around midnight.

  6. 00:00

    For the diehards: Tabatha

Not done yet? Then you carry on with the real diehards to Tabatha: an underground, gloriously cheesy Italian nightclub where you'll wonder how you ended up there — and why it's so much fun.
